In windy weather and unpleasant waves, the new Oceanis 51.1 had to prove itself for two days in a top test. In the harbour of Les Sables on the French west coast, the Beneteau was a much sought-after attraction. Time and again, passers-by surrounded the beefy, yet dynamic-looking 15-metre yacht, whose forward chine gives it a very unique, individual appearance.
With the design by Berret/Racoupeau and Nauta Design, the industry leader is redefining parts of the segment. The Oceanis 51.1 is more spacious, more valuable and more attractive than most of its competitors. It is also currently the only new design in its segment. All other boats of this length and design are based on older models.
This alone explains the great interest, which is also reflected in the order books. Beneteau has already sold its entire annual production before the boat has even been seen once at a trade fair. The Oceanis 51.1 will celebrate its premiere at the Cannes Yachting Festival in mid-September.
As already reported, the boat is extremely customisable - more so than any other cruising yacht currently in large-scale production. The range extends from a tightly sailed charter boat with five cabins plus an optional skipper's berth to the performance-orientated "First Line" with a deep keel and performance rig, which not only guarantees sailing fun for a family crew, but also offers plenty of living space below deck in the three-cabin version.
The test boat going to a German owner corresponded to the "First Line" version, but did not yet have the higher mast. As such, it marks roughly the centre of the spectrum that Beneteau can cover with the Oceanis 51.1. During the strong wind test in the Bay of Biscay, it impressed with its very direct and responsive rudder action, great balance and good performance for the sea conditions. Below deck, it confirmed the feeling of space already expected from the first drawings, which is unique, especially in the foredeck - so much space and such a successful ambience can otherwise only be found on 60-foot yachts.
